From March 2008-2010 The North West StreetGames RESPECT Project has targeted the most disadvantaged RESPECT communities in the region. This was a Sport England funded project, match funded by the Street Games Charity devoted to delivering more sports & leisure opportunities to deprived areas and Sport 4 Life Ltd. (a not for profit organisation) that currently manage the North West Street Games Network.

The project has to date created 440 new volunteering roles in sport, offered 1,208 sports qualifications and provided quality, accredited training & education opportunities and personal development support. 17,370 new participants in sport and 689 new coaches were created via the delivery of local doorstep sports sessions and opportunities to take part at sports events & competitions.

The main aims were to enhance and increase participation of young people from these communities in sports activities, and to engage them as volunteers who can be trained and supported to assist and deliver sports activities in areas of disadvantage were parental support is less. This approach has created a sustainable future for sports activities in these deprived communities, facilitated by providing training courses for young volunteers living in these deprived communities in First Aid, Safeguarding Children and sports specific NGB coaching awards.

The sports included in the RESPECT project included Futsal, Rugby League, Tri-Golf, Handball and StreetCheer. The 10 areas include the most deprived communities from East Manchester, Salford, Liverpool, Knowsley, Wirral, Oldham, Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley and Blackpool.

Project Planning workshops delivered by Manchester Metropolitan University took place for 44 volunteers from Knowsley, Oldham and Burnley. An Outward Bound residential courses took place for 19 volunteers and a Personal Development Training day at Holcombe Moor Army Barracks for 21 volunteers from around the North West in August and October 2008. 86 mini sports tournaments took place across the ten RESPECT areas in the North West and regional tournaments in Handball, Futsal, Tri Golf, Rugby League and StreetCheer in Merseyside, Lancashire and Greater Manchester. As a result of this regional growth in participation the North West StreetGames grew from 13 teams and 800 participants in 2007 to a participation 20 teams and 1250 participants in 2009.
