Get Active Festival

Event Rationale

Active ImageThe Get Active Festival was devised in 2007 by Sport 4 Life as an expansion to the community events programme already in place. Sport4Life had established a track record of being a champion of community focused development, using sport and physical activity as the catalyst, particular to inner city and deprived communities who traditionally do not get the chance to take part.

Active ImageThe idea was to encourage residents in hostels to consider their lifestyles in relation to activity and health. The concept and design of the event built on the success of previous community events, but to give homeless people the opportunity to have a taste of a range of activities, in a safe, contained environment that would help to alleviate any negative associations with exercise and leisure centres. Further to that, it was hoped that by taking part in a range of positive activities, that the participants would be able to find something that interested them and encourage them to pursue that or another similar activity.

After the success of the festivals in 2008, 09, 10 and 2011, it was decided that Sport4Life would like to develop a more holistic approach to the hostel community expanding the 1 day festival into something more, which would include activities offered throughout the year and opportunities for training that would help residents get into the workplace.

Active-Image3A proposal was drafted and after a period of consultation, Comic Relief approved the proposals set out and the 2 year Comic Relief funded Get Active Project was launched at the April 2012 Get Active Festival.
