North West Network

Background to the NW Street Games Network

Active ImageThe North West Street Games Network was established in 2003 by the Government Office for the North West (GONW) with support from the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit (NRU) and Sport England. Street Games aims to work with a range of partners from the sporting community, the statutory & voluntary sectors to provide opportunities to those who normally miss out on sport & physical activities, there is clear evidence that many communities have very low participation rates for a range of reasons.

The North West Sports Network was initially set up informally to provide:

  • A useful form of networking between regeneration initiatives / partnerships
  • A vehicle for sharing best practice procedures
  • Providing support for project staff & volunteers
  • Providing a single voice on issues of concern
  • Improving awareness of and access to funding opportunities
  • Networking partners to national & regional initiatives & opportunities
  • Improved connections through to National Governing Bodies of Sport
  • Delivery of quality sport & leisure opportunities with real legacy objectives

The network is now formally managed by Sport 4 Life Ltd, the network is looking to further develop its partners to include representatives from relevant inner city areas & deprived communities within the North West region of England.

The network holds quarterly meetings across the North West and organises a range of sports festivals and events throughout the year with a range of strategic partners that provide unique sports opportunities for children & young people who normally do not access such sport & leisure opportunities.

Recent developments include addressing the training & education requirements of staff & volunteers to provide access to relevant courses / workshops with a range key partners including, Sports Coach UK, National Governing Bodies of Sport, Sports Leader UK, Sport England, Football Foundation etc.

The network is developing its provision and services in line with the national development of the Street Games initiative, now established as a national charity `Street Games Central` has secured funding from Sport England and is beginning to spread the excellent Street Games initiative across the country.
